Documentory mini task essay

                                                                Documentary Types

Expositionary: The purpose of this is to make an argument. This is the model that is most often associated with documentary in general. The structure is grounded in a series of  backed up evidence. The evidence is presented through verbal commentary from an invisible voice-over narrator, while images provide more evidence. A good example of expositionary documentaries is the TV show americas most wanted, it has hard facts and figures amd backs them up with interviews, Americas most wanted is a documentary series on some of americas murderers, gangsters and trouble makers, using evidence and facts to tell the audience what they did and why they are guilty.

Observational: This is the mode associated with ‘fly-on-the-wall’ type documentaries. They appear to have been filmed in ‘real time’, as if the camera has happened upon events while those involved are seemingly unaware of the filming going on. The filmmakers correspondingly attempt not to interfere in what is underway. We do not hear their questions and we do not see them. There is no voiceover telling us what to think or what conclusions we should draw. The 2010 documentary Armadillo is a prime example due to the way its set out and filmed. This is about a base camp for danish soldiers called camp Armadillo and is situated 3 miles from a taliban village, the documentary shows the dangers and how scary it is to live in these countries with realistic video shooting and blunt honest no makeup scenes.

Interactive:What these films do is emulate the approach participants observation, this means they try to get a nutruel understanding of most of the viewers watching, to try and syncronise them into one state in order for a bigger understanding about he movie. Not only is the filmmaker part of the film, we also get a sense of how situations in the film are affected or altered by their presence. living with micheal jackson by Bashir is a good example as he interacts with the audience and event that the documentary is about, giving it a calmer more relaxed and less cold feeling. Martin Bashir is givin exclusive access to micheal jacksons personal life to see what hes like, while he tells the audience what hes like and how it was.

Reflexive: documentaries don’t see themselves as a transparent window on the world; instead they draw attention to their own construct, and the fact that they are representations. A man with a movie camera is a reflexive documentary as is all just footage that can or cannot contain hidden meaning. A man travels around a city with a camera slung over his shoulder, documenting urban life with dazzling invention.

Performative: These types of documentaries address the audience face on and are emotive and expression to a single persons opinion, supersize me is a good example of this due to the fact its his opinion and his alone telling he audience how he feels, when he speaks to others he still centers around himself. Supersize me is about a man who proves macdonalds is bad, he proves that it causes alot of health issues and that america is becoming bad with habits, in order to do this he eats macdonalds every day for a month or 2.

Conclusion: As a film maker i persoanlly think its better to end a film on cold hard facts, no matter what people wish to believe the truth is and always will be correct until disproven, i think manipulating or twisting a tale may make it more superiour over the true tale like they do in films, such as the revanant and in the heart of the sea, but being truthful can keep it magical and keep people thinking about it afterwards, if you tweak it and alter the truth afterwards its not "wow cant believe that happened in real life" it changes to"hmm i wish that did happen in real life" making the story bigger makes people crave more, making it harder to surpass peoples expectations in the future.

tv ad evaluation

After we had finished our advert we began to create a questionnaire that would be suitable for our film. For this we had to come up with ten questions to ask people on what they thought of our advert. Once we had completed the questions we sent them to a range of people that we would be able to get feedback from for our evaluation. Looking back at the feedback provided I can see that most of my audience were students. The feedback that I received back also stated that the music was catchy and that they would consider buying the product.
From looking back at the advert and the feedback altogether I found that a lot of people understood that it was a male working out in a gym with wearing make up on also. I think the advert had an appropriate impact on some people due to how they responded with honest feedback and said they would buy the product.

Throughout the ad we aimed to get smooth transitions and good angles to make the ad as clear as possible and nice to look at aesthetically.  When it came to the beginning of the video we focused on getting a lot of close up shots of particular parts of my body to show myself working out and to also not show my face, this was to emphasis the point of excersize, focusing on body parts than facial expressions. When it came to when i was leaving the gym we did a tracking shot to follow myself down the stairs and through the doorway before doing a match on shot of me opening the door. For the rest of the advert we focused on getting close ups to show the spray and a more funny side with showing myself wearing make up.

After we had got all of the shots we wanted for the advert we began to take it in turns to edit the pieces together. The first challenge was for us to get all our clips in the right order after we had converted them onto the computer. Whilst one person was editing the scenes together, other members began to look for sound fx, music and anything else to help the production. If there was anything that didn't go well in the advert we would either remove it or re-shoot the part of the advert.

We all discussed what we thought would be the best type to have in it. Before we made the advert we knew we wanted no dialogue to be present to the audience just the use of music and sound fx. we had discussed having a motivated and upbeat type of music. The only sound fx that we decided to have in the advert was a high pitched ding to imply a wink and a boom when the bottle of Impulse hit the bench.

We displayed a picture of a sign saying "Gym members only" at the start of the advert to allow the audience to know where the setting was for the advert. When it came near to the end of the advert we focused on making me look like I was in a changing room with showing me go into the particular room, put clothing on and spray myself with the product. In conclusion to our advert we focused on using close ups to allow the audience to see why we hid my face up, to reveal that I had make up and was expressing my feminine style; before concluding with an extreme close up of the product on the bench with the graphics surrounding it.

overall i think the ad was okay and up to standard of the bcap and barb codes, it advertised what was needed and exaclty as it came, withiout the worry for there to be any harm or offensiveness, the advert is very streamlined to our origional idea except the clothing was femanine in the origional idea where now it is makeup replacing that, this was duee to the difficulty of fitting outfits. overall im 50/50 on the ad, i think the makeup could have been heavily more exagerated and less saturated but overall the shots, editing and team work was overall 100% effort.

3MW Uni Doc pre production

documentary research Primary/secondary

This question i asked because i wanted to find out what people preferred when it comes to documentaries

This is to get an understanding of whether or not documentaries are gennerally popular to people nowadays.

This is to evaluate which kinds of documentaires people like and who presents them.

This is to figure out the contraversy of the documentaires people like, this could be a good sign on whether or not they like something tense or relaxed.

This is to see the age ranges of documentary watchers and how many people of that age range like by concluding all the results

This is to test to see whether my idea of a documenatry would be a good new thing to do to attract people.

This is to see if people are willing to try something new regardless of theiir desired genre.

this is to test to see how inept people are to what draws them into documentaries.

secondary research

econdary research is figures i can help conclude the success of my documentary

there are many people that suffer from stress at uni or planning to go ot uni, my documentary could be useful for the 225,000+ students going to uni, i found these figures on: https://fullfact.org/education/are-there-record-numbers-young-people-going-university/

UK laws on filming
When It come to filming in public areas in the UK you must think and sort out these four things:

Local authority-  You need to get permission a from the person or people this could include the councils land or location you are wanting to film on.

Police-You need to talk to this local authority especially if you are filming on a high way or anywhere that will effect peoples day to day lives.

Others- If one of your actors is being filmed in a public store or restraint or any general public places. You will not only need permission for the location but to permission to show the name or logo of the place. You do not need to ask public people just passing buy in the location you are filming if you are just featuring there fact

Libel/defamation
Defamation-This provides the right for people to complain about the words or language you have used in your media piece that is offensive or has offended them.

Libel-This is a written document on the complaint the person has made about the defamatory.

In our document we have not chosen a too over sensitive topic. We must make sure we do not include any offensive comments and statements that will upset and offend people.

The ofcom broadcasting code is a government set of rules and regulations that must be followed in the media,. It is there in the interest of people and keeping them safe and not effecting and upsetting the public. The ofcom broadcasting also work in licensing, research, codes and policies.

When it comes to the ofcom broadcast code there are there are ten main sections .section one is the protection of under 18s. As our target audience is 17-19 year old we still do have to watch out for this section. Our documentary does not break any of the rules as non of our documentary includes anything that a person under the age of 18 wouldn't be able to watch. Section two is harm and and offence but again we have made sure we have chose a topic to do our documentary on that odes not harm or offend anyone. They are the only two sections that we could slightly break. But due to the topic of our documentary and they way in which it is being made I feel very strongly that we will not break any of the ofcom broadcasting code.

news essay

News ordering is the way the stories in the news are ordered to shown. The order of the news is based on 4 things, topic, order, number, length.
The news has something called the running order which is the order the news stories will run in. The story that is run first is done on the new values. These are how much attention on the other media platforms and shows the audience how many people will be interested in watching that story.  Each story will have different criteria. The main criteria is the more shocking news is the more general public will want to watch that new story.
The news is live so if anything goes wrong then the presenters have to be quick and deal with any problems they face on set. The news can also have slow news day were there is no new interesting new so they have to dig out new that people will want to watch. The final story at the end is called the and finally it is called this because it new normally end on a more positive mood. The new values are guild lines used by media outlets that determent how much prominence to give a story.

Part 1

Look East-Evening News: 29/06/2016

The imapct of brexit on the royal norfolk show were used and letters from world war 2 are found and a motorcycle exhibition with a renowned infamy

in chronological order of display:
-farming community vs brexit
- immigration vs brexit
- justice to murder victims
- reconstruction of a building
- eu UNI funding
- ww2 letters
- motorcyclle show

i think the list is laid out with the grim boring and important type stories first, then watering down into happier more warm tales

Part 2
the news readers were susie fowler watt she was the lead of the news report and the only reporter on tonight, a good reading speed, pronunciation and grammar are very important and needed within the media/news industry

Part 3

news ordering is the use of putting stories in the coreect orderr in order to gain the most interest from the viewer

prospects are the list of stories features in a news programme

a scoop is a story most likely to be shown first due to it being unreported at that time

the other stories appear due to relevance and importance to the general public

the need to improvise and act and think on the news is esential in case breaking news comes in or there is a mishap within the time on screen

the term slow news day essentially means there isnt alot on to talk about so the news is filled in with anything they can find

a debrief is the short summery at the end with a lighter news report and people talking in higher tones of voice to encourage niceness its function is to sum up all thats been spoken of

News values are general guidelines or criteria used by media outlets, such as newspapers or broadcast media, to determine how much prominence to give to a story

Part 4
Bias through selection and omission: The editor expresses bias by choosing a specific news story and with in this story's some detainees can be ignored. Like boos coming from a new clip.

Bias through placement: this is where a story is placed and the influences to what a person thinks about it's importance. Like the main story in the news is a lot more important then the rest of the stories.

Bias by headline: The headline are must read parts of the news that are bold and large but headlines can be misleading and deceptive to getting you to read the story.

Bias by photos, captions and camera angles: photos can make a person look silly, sad, anger with out even being in that mood. The news can twist thing for public point of making it more in-treating and the story's better.

Documentory mini task essay

                                                                Documentary Types

Subjective: This type of documentary has meaning to the peopl involved and the people that may be indirectly involved, it presents someones life with music, angles and lighting within the production,

Documentary Proposal

I want my production to be about abandoned buildings and derelict remains of places, mainly I want to have camera work moving around places with a narrator telling the viewers about it, what they're looking at and what it used to be.

I want the documentary to be an observational documentary of special interest to people that are interested in abandoned places or want to explore a new interest.

My target audience will be ranging in age from 18 - 35 these tend to be the demographics that this documentary entices, I want the primary target audience to be students or in education while i want the secondary audience to be middle class 30+ year olds.

I want the aim of the documentary to be focused towards pure interest, for people to become interested in these type of things and to just show what its like being in an abandoned place. i hope to achieve more fans and interests within this type of genre.

I would need to film in one location once found, an abandoned area with easy access or some way of getting in; The one main location that comes to mind is the HMSO Sovereign House.

a friend with the capability of contact to authorities is needed to be with me, in case anyone is hurt so they or I could phone someone to help, Most preferably my friend Neve or Finlay, i wont need any experts or witnesses.

There wont need to be any props or costumes, needed will be a minimum of 1 phone preferably 2, a camera or another phone to record on, a flashlight and an emergency light, i already have about 75% of the needed equipment. I would only need to buy an emergency light.

the proposed budget is roughly a maximum of £100.
